I believe the workflow is to have a part(s) in an assembly, then go to the the View tab and create a section view (such as Half Section View ) and then go to the part file and change the color when you return to the assembly, the sectioned face of the part will not have changed color. but if you change the color of the part (or another sectioned part) at the assembly level the sectioned plane retains that color.

Those properties are: Cut: The default is Enable checked. If you uncheck this box, the cutting plane in not active and there is no section view showing.

There was only the "Front View" in the sheet and it was active. I think I found the culprit. Apparently, the section view cannot be created since I have a .5mm fillet radius on my part that is a copy of my original part (I did a "Paste as result with link").

Using a 3D element to define a section view makes possible to constrain this element with the geometry of the part. The profile section will automatically be kept up to date if the 3D geometry changes.
