An inferior vena cava filter is a type of vascular filter, a medical device that is implanted by vascular surgeons or interventional radiologists into the inferior vena cava to prevent life-threatening pulmonary emboli (PEs). Their effectiveness and safety profile is well established.

An IVC filter is a small device that is placed in your inferior vena cava to prevent blood clots from moving through your blood into your lungs (see Figure 1). Your IVC filter will be placed by your interventional radiologist. An interventional radiologist is a doctor who specializes in image-guided procedures. Vena cava filters can be placed into the inferior vena cava (IVC) or, much less commonly, the superior vena cava (SVC) as a treatment to prevent pulmonary embolism. Two general types of vena cava filters are available: permanent and retrievable. The short-term effectiveness and safety placement of superior vena cava (SVC) filter in the treatment of upper extremity deep venous thrombosis in patients with contraindication to anticoagulation have been well documented.
