Franz Peter Schubert (31 January 1797 – 19 November 1828) was an Austrian composer.. Schubert died at 31 but was extremely prolific during his lifetime. His output consists of over six hundred secular vocal works (mainly Lieder), seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music and a large body of chamber and piano music. Once a stern critic of German music, Franz Schubert became passionate devotee of Beethoven later in life, so much so that he asked on his deathbed to be buried with his idol. Although as a teenager Franz Schubert wrote that Austrian music should rid itself of Germanic influence - a clear reference to Beethoven - he was later to change his mind totally. Franz Schubert - Franz Schubert - Maturity: On his return to Vienna he shared lodgings with Mayrhofer and during the winter months composed the operetta Die Zwillingsbrüder (The Twin Brothers).
